Origins and History

The first known double-bladed lightsaber in the Star Wars universe is Dark Lord Exar Kun’s. Exar Kun’s weapon gave him a significant edge over his opponents, especially during the fight against his former master. Over time, both Jedi and Sith adopted the design, recognizing its potential.

On-screen, the first and most iconic double bladed lightsaber is Darth Maul’s. He made the weapon famous with his combat style in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Lightsabers from both sides can be used independently as a single lightsaber when Maul needs to. 

Combat and Advantages

A double-bladed lightsaber offers several advantages over traditional single-bladed designs, such as:

However, mastering a double-bladed lightsaber is challenging. Wielders must constantly adjust their posture and grip to avoid striking themselves. Hence, most double bladed lightsaber wielder are well-versed in the Jar-Kai and Niman (Form VI) combat forms.

Known Wielders in Star Wars Universe

Beyond Darth Maul and Exar Kun, several notable characters have wielded double-bladed lightsabers. There is Pong Krell – A Besalisk Jedi Master who have multiple arms. On the Sith side, there is Darth Zannah – A Sith apprentice who customized her weapon with shorter blades. Last but not least, the Jedi Temple Guards – Elite Jedi protectors who wielded yellow-bladed saberstaffs.
